The 3rd Coast Cafe Gallery exhibition, 'From the Corners of My Mind', by Louise Rouleau, a.k.a. L'OR Artiste, will close at the end of the month.   As detailed here, this exhibit is practically all that remains of her 35 year career as an artist.  With her own experience of helplessness, hopelessness and loss fresh on her mind, Louise watched in horror as hurricanes Harvey and Irma wreaked havoc on places and people's lives and decided that she must help in their recovery.  The first person who provides proof positive to the Coast management that they have donated at least a thousand dollars (U.S.) to a bona fide hurricane relief charity, such as, YOUCARING - Compassionate Crowdfunding,  HAND IN HAND - A Benefit For Hurricane Relief or the American Red Cross will be entitled to claim one of Louise's last remaining works (20" x 26") as a token of her appreciation for your kindness.

L'OR Loses a Lifetime of Her Work

On June 20th of this year, a "huge wave" from an exploded Montreal water main flooded her basement art studio, and in a few cruel moments, destroyed much of her life's work.  Most of what remains of it today is what was hanging out of harms way, here in Chicago, on the walls of the Coast.

Independence Day Weekend Schedule

The Coast will be open for brunch Saturday July 1st, Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd from 7am to 3pm.  We will be closed Tuesday July 4th and reopen on Wednesday July 5th with new kitchen hours and a new summer menu.

      Two hundred and forty-one years ago, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence and declared the thirteen American colonies to be a new nation.  So thankful!  Yes, we love the food, the fireworks, the hanging with family and friends on the Fourth, but more importantly, we love living in this, the greatest country on earth, flaws and all!  Thank you America!  Thank you to all the Families serving us in our Military around the world.  And thank you to our First Responder Families here at home.  We wish for each of you a happy and safe holiday weekend!

New Hours and Menu

     When the Coast reopens on the 5th of July, our kitchen will be open from 7am to 11pm and we'll be showing off our new exciting summer menu.

Today is a special day for all of the amazing Father's out there!  Happy Father's Day and Thank you for everything you do!  For my Dad.  Thank you for being my mentor and  inspiration to cultivate my own interests and dream big.  I miss you everyday!

Spring has sprung! …kind of

Though the weather hasn’t quite caught on, it is officially spring! Keep a look out for some new and fun changes around the coast. We will be playing with new recipes at dinner, testing menu items, updating our beers and wines, and adding to our every day menu. Nothing but great things coming your way!

Our Valentine's Prix-Fixe Dinner Adventure!

Thank you to everyone who chose to celebrate their Valentine’s Day with us at the 3rd Coast, whether it was on your own, with that special someone or in a group, we had a great crowd Tuesday night.

The Coast doesn’t typically celebrate holidays, but we decided this year to test a Prix-fixe dinner with reservations. The night went off without a hitch and we had rave reviews! For those of you that joined us, please email us your thoughts!

Keep us in mind for your festivities next Valentine’s Day as we might make this a yearly tradition, or who knows, maybe a monthly treat!

The 3rd Coast Cafe

"Breakfast anytime" are my favorite words when looking for a place to write about. My friend, restaurateur Dan Rosenthal, with whom I worked to make Chicago restaurants smoke-free, joined me. He said he loves this neighborhood spot — which proudly says it's the oldest cafe in the Gold Coast — for dinner too.

On entering the cafe, which is a few steps down from street level, giving it a cozy feel, I was drawn to the counter with its freshly baked scones — a signature item. We ordered some, of course, and also shared a Chicago-style smoked Polish sausage, cut and grilled. It was a nice change from other sausages and came with eggs, toast, some spicy mustard and hash browns.

The Texas French toast can be either thick-cut sourdough or cinnamon raisin sprinkled with powdered sugar. I chose the latter. A great option was the Old Smokehouse bacon, which is ordered by the "stick." "I'll have three please." And the scones? 3rd Coast deserves to be very proud of them.

No wonder it's been around so long.
